The Dropshipping Product Research Checklist for India
Use this India-focused checklist to evaluate product usefulness, ad evidence, competition, landed costs, COD exposure, suppliers, and controlled testing.

Product research becomes unreliable when every candidate is judged differently. One day a seller chooses an item because a reel looks impressive; the next day because a supplier labels it trending. A consistent checklist protects the decision from excitement and confirmation bias.
Use this framework before committing advertising budget. A strong answer does not guarantee success, and a weak answer does not always mean failure. The purpose is to identify uncertainty and decide whether the cost of learning is reasonable.

Customer and problem fit
Write down the customer, situation, problem, and expected outcome. If the explanation needs several paragraphs, the advertisement may struggle to communicate it quickly.
- Is the target buyer identifiable?
- Is the problem frequent, frustrating, expensive, emotional, or highly visible?
- Does the product create an outcome that can be demonstrated honestly?
- Is the product understandable without technical education?
- Would the buyer still care after the novelty disappears?
Avoid inventing medical, safety, or performance benefits that the supplier cannot substantiate.
Product and fulfilment fit
Operational friction can destroy an otherwise attractive offer. Examine size, weight, fragility, moving parts, batteries, liquids, sizing complexity, assembly, warranty expectations, and the chance that the delivered item looks different from the advertisement.
Ask whether packaging can protect the item through normal courier handling. Check whether variants increase picking mistakes and whether customers need instructions in local languages. Verify actual supplier terms rather than assuming that a listed item is consistently available.
India-market economics
Build three cases: optimistic, expected, and stressed. Include supplier price, packaging, shipping, payment fees, advertising cost per purchase, cancellation, return, replacement, and RTO allowance.
For COD-heavy traffic, an order is not the same as collected revenue. A campaign can show attractive order volume while confirmation failure or RTO damages cash flow. Use the dropshipping profit calculator to see which assumptions have the greatest effect.
Reject a candidate if it requires an unrealistic selling price or leaves no room for ordinary variation in acquisition and fulfilment costs.
Demand and advertising evidence
Search for evidence that customers and advertisers use language connected to the exact product. Separate broad category interest from demand for this item.
- Are current, product-relevant ads observable?
- Do multiple independent advertisers appear?
- Is the evidence recent enough for the decision?
- Are creatives meaningfully different or duplicated?
- Do comments reveal questions and objections rather than verified purchases?
Ad longevity is persistence evidence, not proof of sales. Likewise, view counts and engagement can be influenced by paid distribution and should not be treated as revenue.
Competition and differentiation
Competition can validate awareness, but excessive similarity makes entry expensive. Compare competitor pricing, bundles, demonstrations, guarantees, delivery expectations, customer education, and store quality.
Write one defensible reason a buyer would choose your offer. “Better marketing” is not specific. A clearer demonstration, more useful bundle, trustworthy instructions, appropriate language, faster support, or a better-defined audience can be tested.
Supplier and compliance review
Order a sample whenever practical. Confirm dimensions, materials, packaging, instructions, branding, and variant accuracy. Check category-specific advertising policies, product claims, trademarks, import restrictions, and safety responsibilities.
Do not use supplier photographs or competitor creative unless you have the necessary rights.
Controlled-test readiness
Before launch, record the hypothesis, test budget, audience, creative angles, expected economics, success measures, and stop conditions. This prevents the goalposts from moving after money has been spent.
A product is ready for testing when the remaining uncertainty can be answered with a bounded experiment. It is not ready when essential economics, compliance, supplier, or customer-fit questions remain unanswered. Scout’s research workflow helps organise these checks without turning a score into a promise.
